Like orcas, the long-finned pilot
whale is not really a whale but actually a dolphin.
It is jet black or dark grey with a grey or white
diagonal stripe behind each eye, and a big round forehead
(melon). They live in the slightly warm waters of
the Atlantic Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere, from
Iceland to the Canary Islands. Its diet is based basically
on cephalopods, especially squid. They are also known
as the pothead whale because the shape of their head
reminded early whalers of black cooking pots! During
the day, calderones usually rest near the sea surface;
they are able to submerge up to 600 meters depth.
Adult
long-finned pilot whale’s weight: 1,8-3,5 tons.
